But where can you find a suitable villa in Bali? The most popular areas around Kuta, Legian, Seminyak, Canggu, Bukit/Jimbaran, Sanur and Ubud are getting more and more crowded and touristy every day. Traffic is heavy and the Balinese way of life is giving way to rampant commercialism.
If you leave this area, on the other hand, there’s the risk that you’ll feel isolated without all the amenities you’re used to.
One often-overlooked possibility is Lovina in north Bali. Although it’s far less developed than south Bali, there are enough facilities – such as shops and supermarkets (including Carrefour and a bakery/delicatessen), bars, restaurants, banks, and medical facilities – to live here quietly and comfortably. And it’s yet to be discovered by the tourist hordes – who are generally put off by the fact that there’s a three-hour drive over mountain roads to get there.
Sure it’s quite far from the airport, but the thing is you only need to make the trip when you arrive and when you leave. In between those times, you’re in an area that’s virtually free of traffic jams, meaning you can go on pleasant days out without the inevitable one-hour parking in traffic you usually experience in south Bali. A trip to the lake and volcano at Kinatamani, for example, takes about the same amount of time from Lovina as it does from Kutu, but the difference is that the trip from Lovina is interesting, picturesque and smog-free.
Another major advantage of buying a villa in north Bali is that prices are far more reasonable than in the south. So, not only is the area more peaceful and secluded, you can afford a bigger property and more land here.
